Winter etchings 2019
I've been busy again making new work - as usual, my artwork starts with a drawing - the aim is always to capture the movement and energy of the birds.
In these new pieces, I wanted to explore the motif of the large moon in the centre and play with placing the birds in and around it to see what atmosphere I could create.
To make the etched marks the plate is coated with wax and lines are scratched into the wax, then the plate is immersed in a bath of copper sulphate many many times to etch the lines and tones of the image.
The etching plate has then been cut out by hand using a jewellery saw, in a lengthy and intricate process. The colours are added during the inking stage and blending them during the wiping of the plate.
Each print takes time to print and is not a process you can rush.
Ive printed very small editions of these 3 new works - just 12 prints each - I feel it keeps them rare and special and also means i can move on quicker to the next idea! let see what 2020 brings.
